Back to the Future Shoes

Hello all. Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I just got back from the US and have been really busy. You will see two posts today, one about Nike shoes and the other about revolutionary furniture. Anyways lets go Back to The Future. If you remember in Back to the Future part II (if you haven't seen it then watch it) Marty has a really nice pair of Nike shoes which have self fitting laces. The movie is set in 2015 which is only a year away and the bad news is I don’t think we'll be seeing any hoverboards or flying cars.

The good news is that it is possible that we’ll be seeing these kind of shoes available in 2015. Tinker Hatfield, a designer at Nike New Orleans, claimed that these shoes are not too far away from production. We have seen replicas of these shoes but without the self fitting laces. Hopefully when these shoes enter the market they won’t be overly expensive. In 2009 Nike filed a patent for ‘Automatic Lacing System’ and supposedly an ‘Automatic Ankle Clinching System’. A pair of replicas usually go for a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand pounds. Hopefully we’ll see that awesome hoverboard as well.

Our next amazing invention features revolutionary technology in furniture and home space. Boxetti, is produced by a Latvian Company El Studija and is designed by Rolands Landsbergs. Boxetti really is a revolutionary approach to furniture that may come in handy in small houses. Boxetti is designed to make the most out of your space. The models are essentially boxes that then fold out to display various types of furniture.

There are five sets in the collection, Boxetti_Private (bedroom), Boxetti_Practice (office work space), Boxetti_Lounge (living room), Boxetti_Thrill (TV and speakers) and Boxetti_Lunch (kitchen). I won’t go into too much detail here (click on the link below for their website) as I do want to talk more about this.

In the future I can definitely see homes with this kind of furniture in them. As the population increases, in major cities houses/apartments will have less space and will have to make use of the space. Boxetti really does use space effectively allowing you to fold something away if you’re not using it while looking amazing at the same time. To be honest I really can’t find many negatives about this product. Even the prices are reasonable averaging at about 7,500 euros per Boxetti model. It may be a bit confusing and difficult to use at first but my sure that it’s easy to get the hang of.  It’s something out of the science fiction universe that has warped into our dimension.

Minority Report Tech Available!

It seems as if the seemingly impossible technology from movies like "Minority Report" has become available for daily use! Meet 'Leap', a new type of technology that can be connected to your computer and allow the user to navigate hands free (without a mouse). It's about the size of a relatively big USB stick and is only £70 (yes I checked on Amazon) and is 200 times more accurate than previous devices, like Kinect. Leap is 0.5 inches tall, 1.2 inches wide 3 inches deep and weighs only 0.1 pounds! Leap really is bringing the future of hands free technology to our control.

Leap is meant to be incredibly accurate so that it can register a sharpened pencil to 1/100 of a millimeter. Leap allows you to draw amazing 2-D and 3-D drawings, navigating your personal computer and even play games like Fruit Ninja or Blue Estate Prologue. Now for the time being Leap is only available for Mac and Windows but is said to be compatible with Linux soon. This is essentially a more accurate and more creative iPad or tablet with it’s own app store.

The store has many different types of apps allowing you to play, create, explore and learn. One can create pottery, air drum, explore Google Earth and even conduct music. But of this amazing device is said to have many flaws. Looking on the Amazon user reviews I noticed how average the reviews were. The top amount of reviews (41) were in the 5 star category but 27 reviews were in the 1 star category. Most of the users say it is a great piece of technology that really innovates and revolutionizes navigating a computer but the complaints are that there aren't enough good apps. The users say consistently that it’s easy to reach the edges of Leap’s ability and that the software was a disappointment.

This is a great piece of tech that surely is going to evolve into something bigger but I can only hope that anyone reading this waits until further software updates. At this stage Leap is a beta tester (in my opinion) and needs feedback and time to grow into the proper thing. I see a lot of potential and promise in this product but maybe now is not the time to buy it.

Whilst surfing the internet I found this pretty amazing concept. 2014 is the year when wearable tech will really come in full swing. We’ve seen wearable tech like Google Glasses, Pebble and Samsung Smartwatch. These new technologies have really just arrived so who knows what we’ll see in the future!

Well maybe we will. This image is a new concept from Yanko Design (designed by Hiromi Kiriki ) of a wearable computer. Yes a wearable computer! Now this is only a concept so there’s no guarantee of what might surface in the future but I do think it is an accurate concept based on all the wearable tech we have seen this year.

This computer features a flexible OLED touchscreen (not sure if it’s tablet or not...), a holographic projector and a pull out keyboard! Not too much has been said by the designer but he mentions there are social networking capabilities. As you may have noticed this computer/tablet is wearable which really makes me think, will we see more things like this in the future? Kiriki says in the article that this concept is set to earmarked in the year 2020. Of course the selling part of this product is the fact that it’s actually wearable but will people actually want to buy this product? Great it’s wearable. Great it’s a computer but I predict that in the future tablets will become smaller and more portable, to the point where you could just fit them into your back pocket. I mean really who’s going to want to wear a computer as a bracelet.

Now this is a really great concept, in fact I love the idea and I do think it is the start of something great. Wearable tech is really becoming a reality and this idea isn’t too far away. In conclusion I think that this tech is great and may be successful the first couple of years but I think that the future of technology is heading towards holograms, stuff you would see in Star Wars or other science fiction movies. That is wear the future of portable technology is.
